Setting up the BIOS2 Laboratory – Biomarkers Infrared Spectroscopy and Sensing Laboratory – AREA 3: Sensing,
measurements, and control of intelligent machines. The laboratory will include a complete facility for the analysis
of the optical absorption spectra of the biomarkers involved in pathologies/illnesses with an extremely high
precision and resolution. The list of the equipment is provided hereinafter:
Main assets (to be installed)
 High resolution FTIR spectrometer allowing the acquisition of the gaseous biomarkers infrared spectra
with resolutions higher than 0.06 cm. Rapid, interleaved and Step Scan technology will allow researchers
to perform experiments with high temporal resolution.
 RAPID-SCAN, ULTRA-BROADLY TUNABLE MID-IR CW LASER SYSTEM multi-quantum
cascade laser system emitting in the range 5.4 μm -11 μm. It will offer a tuning range approaching 1000
cm-1 (> 6 μm) and an output power up to 1 W, and TEM00 beam quality to enable high-efficiency fiber
coupling, wavelength repeatability as high as < 0.1 cm-1. This laser source will be coupled with an acoustic
detection module for photoacoustic spectroscopy and sensing of the biomarkers.
The listed assets will be installed in a designated room of the PolySenSe laboratory into the DIF-POLIBA building,
complementing and consolidating the already existing facilities for optical gas sensing and spectroscopy.
