Mission

The Law and Policy Hub (LaPoH) is located within the LIDER-Lab and has three main objectives:

  • 1) perform cross-field regulatory analyses on the broad legal framework that is applicable to the activities of the project;
  • 2) advise on relevant policies and provide best practices;
  • 3) develop legal-ethical awareness in biorobotics research.

The LaPoH comprises a network of established and early-career scholars with multi-faceted expertise ranging from data law to AI governance, from intellectual property to cybersecurity, from health law and insurance law to research ethics.

One of the main outcomes of the LaPoH’s activities is the cross-field regulatory analysis that maps enablers and obstacles arising from the complex regulatory landscape that frame the research and innovation activities in the fields of BioRobotics & Health, Sustainability and Science to Engineering Translation. The analysis will be iteratively updated throughout the course of the project and presented to the members of the other WPs during awareness-raising events. From such an analysis stem policy recommendations and best practices that are meant to foster regulatory enablers and provide practical recommendations to researchers and bionengineers.

An Advisory Board has been set up to strengthen the capacities and complement the expertise of the LaPoH, as well as to support its visibility through events, networking opportunities and awareness campaigns. The members of the Advisory Board are:

  • Irene Giovanna Aprile, Fondazione Don Gnocchi
  • Annalisa Calabrò, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore
  • Simona Crea, IUVO and Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies
  • Giovanni Comandé, Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies
  • Sabrina Grigolo, EUPATi
  • Gianclaudio Malgieri, Leiden University
  • Andrea Parziale, Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies
  • Arianna Rossi, Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies

Project results

Set-up of LaPoH

This report details how the Law and Policy Hub and the Advisory Board were established

Cross-field regulatory analysis – Phase I

This report illustrates the ethical-legal framework that is applicable to the BRIEF activities. It provides a unique crossed-field analysis aiming at developing useful policies and recommendations on emerging technologies for various stakeholders, including biorobotic researchers.

Cross-field regulatory analysis – Phase II

This report builds on the previous cross-field analysis and covers legislation concerning personal and non-personal data, medical devices, AI, intellectual property, and insurance law. It illustrates concrete use cases and underscores existing legal enablers and challenges.

Final cross-field regulatory analysis

This report completes the cross-field regulatory analysis.

It will be published at the end of the project.

Report on policy design and advice

This report contains a set of policy recommendations for European policymakers and best practices for researchers working in the biorobotics field, often with biomedical applications, within the BRIEF project.

Report on policy design and advice – update

This report contains a set of policy recommendations for European policymakers and best practices for researchers working in the biorobotics field, often with biomedical applications, within the BRIEF project.

The report will be published at the end of the project.
