Lab Mission

According to the general aims of the WP3-BioRobotics Science to Engineering Translation, the MEASBIOROB Laboratory features a comprehensive facility of measurement and characterization for biorobotics technologies. The measurement technologies range from non-contact (optical) 3D surface/topography reconstruction of objects and surfaces, Optical Distributed Sensor Interrogator, thermal and electrical characterization, optical and electron microscopy preparation tools, and bench instruments. The laboratory aims to be a reference point for developing set-up and experiments for biorobotics device characterization inside the BioRobotics Institute and within the scientific community. The access to the facility allows research on biorobotic technologies by providing means for measurement and characterization of surfaces, materials, devices. Hereinafter specific targets of these research activities are described:

  • Non-destructive investigation of 3D surfaces/topography of materials, surfaces and devices from nano to micro to meso scale in optical profilometry and/or electron microscopy.
  • Characterization of electrical conductivity and (also simultaneous) temperature of electronic, robotic materials and devices during operation.
  • Testing of sensors and measurement instruments for biorobotics.

A strong connection with all tasks of WP3 is foreseen, as the developed materials and devices (e.g. 3D printed structures, soft robotic artefacts) would need a specific characterization in MEASBIOROB Lab. Similar connections are foreseen with activities of WP4 regarding integrated platforms, of WP5 on healthcare technologies, and WP6 regarding manufacturing bioinspired, bioderived structures.

Devices

Luna ODiSi 6101 Optical Distributed Sensors Interrogator

One channel Rayleigh sensors interrogator. High-definition (HD) fiber optic sensors are distributed sensors based on the naturally-occurring Rayleigh backscatter in optical fiber, delivering maximum spatial resolution for static and quasi-static applications.

The ODiSI 6000 Series provides thousands of strain or temperature measurements per meter of a single high-definition fiber sensor. The ultra-high resolution data can fully map the contour of strain for a structure under test or the continuous temperature profile of a process in real time.

The sensor is flexible, low profile, requires no electrical source and can be bonded to sharply curved surfaces, embedded within structures or mounted directly to electrical surfaces.
