Lab Mission

This facility will enable the embedding of photonic sensors in smart and bio-materials enabling haptic robotics based on fiber optic sensors.

Devices

Optical Microscope

Instrument model Olympus BX53M. It was selected due to its versatility to work in transmission and reflection modes. It includes polarized light and phase contrast accessories, which will facilitate the optical characterization of embedded optical fibers in materials.

Optical fiber recoater

This item allows recoating optical fibers after splices, in order to avoid using rigid protection sleeves which make fiber integration difficult. We have selected model Thorlabs PTR403B. This model has the best features at the selected budget level.

Temperature-controlled chamber

In this chamber, the fabricated devices can be tested to temperature and humidity variations. The chosen instrument has been model Angelantoni DY110, which allows temperature and humidity controlled in a compact unit of internal dimensions 55x45x45 cm. The temperature range is -40 to 180ºC. (The unit has not been yet delivered).

Near-infrared camera

The near-infrared camera allows acquiring images of the infrared light coming from the optical fibers. The sensing material is InGaAs, which covers the infrared range 900-1700nm, therefore it overlaps with the fiber-optic most typical wavelength of 1550nm. The size of the sensor is 320×256 pixels. Model NIT WiDy SenS 320V-ST.
